Since the 1700’s Enlightenment period there have been those who’ve criticized belief in the Bible by perpetuating the myth that the Bible is superstition, and that belief in it condemns humanity to a return to the dark ages.  The same myth is perpetuated today by skeptics who use the same ideology that was used in the 1700’s. They often ‘label’ believers in the Bible as members of the ‘flat earth society’ in an attempt to denigrate the Bible as outmoded superstition.  Often quoted is the persecution that Galileo went through. So what about it?  Galileo considered himself a committed Catholic yet it was the Catholic belief, not based in the Bible for which Galileo was persecuted.  But that had to do more with the official Catholic doctrine which went far afield of the Bible and it’s teachings. The Bible actually says, “He (God) sits enthroned above the circle of the earth…” (Isaiah 40:22 NIV). The word translated “circle” is the Hebrew “khoog”, which can also be translated as “roundness,” “circle,” “circuit,” or “compass” (ref: Strongs Dictionary, 2329). The “roundness” of the earth is a viewpoint from space that no mere man had in 760 BC when those words were written. In the other oldest book, Genesis, God told Abraham that the stars are without number – also contrary to what men thought until Galileo came along with his telescope. Now, with Hubble we know that is literally the truth. (Until Galileo the star count was between five and six thousand). Nearly all scientific disciplines were begun by men with a biblical world view.  Below are the examples:

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) – Hydraulics, Anatomy
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) – Celestial Mechanics, Astronomy
Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) – Hydrostatics, Fluid Pressure
Robert Boyle (1627-1691) – Chemistry, Elements, Gas Volume & Pressure, Scientific Method
Isaac Newton (1642-1727) – Calculus, Laws of Gravity & Motion
John Woodward (1665-1728) – Paleontology
Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) – Systematic Biology Classification
Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) – Comparative Anatomy, Vertebrate Paleontology
Michael Faraday (1791-1867) – Electromagnetics, Field Theory
Charles Babbage (1792-1871) – Computer Science
Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) – Ichthyology, Glacial Geology
James Joule (1818-1889) – Reversible Thermodynamics
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) – Genetics
Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) – Bacteriology, Germs cause Disease, Law of Biogenesis
Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) – Thermodynamics, Energetics
William Ramsay (1852-1916) – Isotopic Chemistry

Today, those who perpetuate the idea that Bible believers stand in the way of scientific progress are simply rehashing the same false and tired argument that was used by the various “Enlightenment” philosophers.  They attempt to portray those who have a biblical world view as being backward, and superstitious, and un-scientific. The fact that Christians with a biblical world view participate in all the science disciplines today is ignored by those who make such a foolish contention.

The Bible is unique in that it has proven itself in many different fields.  It is archaeologically, historically, prophetically accurate and has withstood the attempts of it’s many adversaries to destroy it completely.

The Hubble Space Telescope confirms more than ever what God told Abraham;  the stars are without number as the sand of the sea shore.  – Genesis 22:17
